Louisiana s Insurance Crisis
The insurance crisis in Louisiana has become increasingly concerning marked by several pressing issues that need urgent attention The growing risks to homeowners due to extreme weather events and declining populations in areas with high insurance rates compound the issue
Regulatory officials are falling short as they struggle to effectively regulate the insurance industry and promote fair competition Commissioner of Insurance Jim Donelon received 680 000 from the insurance industry between 2015 and 2019 raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest

LOUISIANA NEEDS:

Lower insurance rates Elected officials working for the people
Insurance companies held accountable Transparency Public education advocacy outreach
Rising utility rates
Utility companies citing factors such as the escalating cost of natural gas and the increasing frequency of severe weather events have consistently sought approval from the state government to raise rates Entergy asked the state for rate increases of 173 million over 3 years exacerbating the financial strain on Louisiana households
Louisiana residents already grappling with high gas prices and record heat have been left with some of the highest electricity bills in the country leaving many shocked and unable to afford basic necessities Furthermore continued rate hikes could leave a significant portion of the population without access to electricity forcing some to put their safety and property at risk by reducing their energy consumption such as turning off thermostats

LOUISIANA DESERVES:

Transparency Performance based rate making Better monitoring by the Public Service Commission
Penalties for companies with long outages or unreliability Investigation into utility company spending
Gradient that fades to transparency
